Hiking Trip Part 3

Glacier Adventures

The third day of our trip started after a good and healthy breakfast at the camp site... this time we wanted to hike to Buarbreen, which is Norway's third biggest glacier. It is itself rather a part of the bigger Folgefonna glacier, but still very impressive and majestic in it's own rights. The hiking route to the glacier is one of the nicest I've ever walked, mixing different terrains in a very diverse way, so that it is even fun to go up there, in contrast to the demanding Trolltunga hike. It takes roughly 1:30 to 2 hours to get to the edge of the glacier, further walking onto the glacier is possible but only with the right equipment and guidance, which we obviously did not have, so we just walked as far as we could and took some nice pictures before returning to the camp.

Our destination, viewed from just outside the car

These guys seem to be the guardians of the glacier, as you have to pass their compound to reach the hiking route...

Another view of the glacier! Up we go!

The first section of the route, along the river coming from the glacier, features a cairn collection

Über sieben Brücken musst du gehn'...

Nice cascades everywhere. In Norway, those are typically also the hiking route itself :D

View towards the glacier a bit higher up on the route...

...and down into the valley! In my opinion, f***in beautiful ;)

Posing 101 #1: ridiculous Conqueror stance in front of landmark

Another view down the valley. The hiking route leads up on the left side, where the forest is located

Getting very near!

And from up here, the shots down the valley get more and more idyllic...

dito... the cascades come from the glacier, obviously

There it is... I love the blue parts in the ice!

A last warning...

Edge of the glacier, where the ice is rather thin...

And here some of the main parts of it... thick ice, ranging from grey to blue-ish color

Same as above... plus here you see where the melting process starts and how the water comes from the glacier...

Adventure Time #2: Rope acrobatics over deadly cascades

Standing in the middle of the cascades, on a piece of rock...

...only reachable over this very nice and sophisticated (and absolutely secure) bridge-like apparatus

After returning to camp, we had our last night at the camp site, and also the worst... it rained the whole night in a very hard and stormy way, so that I could not really catch some sleep. This, however, was not that much of a problem, because on the next day we would depart for our first hut accomodation, near the Lysefjord and Preikestolen, our next hiking destination...
